2/17/2017 (WINCHESTER, MA) On April 17, 2017, Joe Zampitella of Winchester will run the 121st Boston Marathon® in support of Boston Children’s Hospital. As a member of Credit Unions Kids @ Heart team, Joe has an extra incentive to push across the finish line: helping children and families who receive world-class care at Boston Children’s Hospital.

For 21 years, CUK@H has has been sponsoring runners in the Boston Marathon to raise money specifically for Boston Children’s Hospital, as a way for credit unions to give back. As not-for-profit institutions, credit unions are anchored firmly in their communities, committed to providing support to their members and local charitable organizations-- like CUK@H. Credit Unions Kids @ Heart brings together 59 credit unions from across the country to support their 21-runner team, which is made up of people involved in the credit union industry.

To date, CUK@H has collectively raised more than $5 million for the Children’s Hospital, and 100% of those funds go to the Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the CUK@H corporate sponsors, none of the money donated is diverted to administrative costs.

Credit Unions Kids @ Heart has chosen to focus on funding research into other rare pediatric disorders such as Moyamoya disease, Cerebral Palsy, Sturge-Weber Syndrome, and pediatric brain tumors.

The Credit Unions Kids @ Heart funding has helped doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital discover unique diagnostic signatures for medulloblastoma, glioma, glioblastoma, juvenile pilocytic astrocystoma, AVM, Chiari malformations, and Moyamoya disease, according to the yearly report released by Boston Children’s Hospital in 2016. Dr. Edward Smith and Dr. Darren Orbach continued the development of better diagnostic tools for Moyamoya disease, giving doctors the ability to better assess which patients need the closest monitoring, and give more accurate one-year surgical outcomes. In the 2016 yearly report, Dr. Smith hopes that having identified the Moyamoya biomarker will help speed the development of better therapeutic tools.

The funding also helped to conduct a 20 year retrospective study of patients with Moyamoya disease who underwent revascularization surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital. The results? Prior patients are doing great, with 90% employed and more than half with completed college degrees. Continued funding will allow for even more advancements, and provide a positive outlook for children and families receiving treatments at Boston Children’s Hospital.

To date, the 2017 Credit Unions Kids @ Heart team has raised $318,492.09.
